Do Not Feed The Troll!

I see on a weekly basis trolling online, its normally younger teens and it’s not only on social media/ chat sites but online gaming. While my son is too young for social media he has encountered trolling in online gaming.

Most people don’t realise that the troll is only there to get a reaction, so if no reaction is given they will get bored quickly and move on. Sad thing is there is always someone who feeds the troll- Do Not feed the troll!

Trolls hide behind a screen, they think that abusing and intimidating people online is fun. When they go too far they use the excuse, ‘it was just in fun’ and wasn’t meant to hurt anyone. This is how they justify their behaviour. Do Not feed the troll!

Do not feed the troll; do this by ignoring all nasty, immature or offensive comments. Most online gaming and all social media have a block button, use it! By blocking, all the trolls posts and comments will not be seen by you- encourage your friends to do the same.

Trolls have a tendency once the fake account they’re using doesn’t get the right reaction or they get banned….. like a grumpy old troll they resurface under a new fake account ‘sigh’. Once again hit that block button and hopefully they get bored and go do some homework or something!

Also be sure to report the troll, by doing this the admin will be notified and keep an eye out to nip it in the butt quickly. Encountering a troll can really be a bummer and ruin your day, but just remember Do Not feed the troll, report and block.

Remember trolling is different to cyberbullying, cyberbullying is a personal attack against someone while trolling is to get a reaction- trolling can most definitely turn into cyberbullying so please protect yourself by reporting and blocking.
