Monster Dad’s keyboard on his iPad went all silly and split into two, he had no idea how it happened or how to fix it, thankfully there is something called Google that saved the day. The split keyboard feature is something iPad users might not know is available, you might like to use the split keyboard for when you are holding the iPad on the sides to easily type with your thumbs.
Step One
To turn on or to check if Split Keyboard is active:
Settings- General- Keyboard- Split Keyboard

To access your split keyboard you will find keyboard in your general settings- this is located near the bottom of this list

Split Keyboard will be active if green
Step Two
Now you know that your Split Keyboard is active you can now use the feature

Normal Keyboard
To split your Keyboard, hold your finger on the bottom far right keyboard button which will give you 2 options:
-Undock
-Split

Still pressing on the screen slide your finger to ‘split’ and release

Now you can easily type with your thumbs while holding the iPad on the sides.
To return to normal keyboard, press the bottom far right keyboard button till the options:
-Merge
-Dock and Merge
While pressing the screen move your finger over to merge to return to normal keyboard.

Bonus Tips:
If you find the Normal or Split Keyboard half way up the screen but prefer it placed at the bottom:
-Undock
-Dock and merge
These options will return the keyboard to the bottom of your screen.
Also you can pinch the screen in and out to do the Split Keyboard feature- I think this is how Monster Dad first accidently discovered Split Keyboard.
