Like Pokémon? You’ll want to own YO-KAI Watch!
I recently went on a bit of a shopping spree at EB Games Australia; I’ve known about the Nintendo 3DS for awhile now but was always apprehensive since I’m not a fan of 3D gaming. Well I thought I wasn’t but to be honest I never really gave it a chance.
I asked an online gamers group about their thoughts on Nintendo 3DS and after all positive comments I had to try for myself. One of the members warned me about Yo-Kai watch ‘don’t buy Yo-Kai if you want to lose months of your life playing this game!’, well that had me wanting to give the game a go.
I’m not normally easily persuaded but the Gaming Community is very passionate and know their stuff!

I will write a detailed review for the Nintendo 3DS but today I want to discuss Yo-Kai Watch.
Yo-Kai Watch was released last month for the Nintendo 3DS and after hearing great things, I had to try it for myself. I haven’t seen the YO-KAI Watch animated series on GO! TV, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

It’s cool knowing that Yo-Kai Watch is based around the Yokai of Japanese folklore which they capture really well in the game with the game Yo-Kai causing mischief as they do in folklore.
You can play the game as a boy named Nate or a girl named Katie, I found Yo-Kai a lot like Pokémon as in the way you travel around towns searching for Yo-Kai to befriend or fight and solving problems caused by mischievous Yo-Kai.

The battle system is really fun, it’s a wheel type system on the touch screen of your 3DS in which you can have 6 Yo-Kai friends helping in battle, only 3 can attack at a time but you move the wheel to swap Yo-Kai so all 6 can be used. Also you have easy options to heal with food items and add power up talismans.
Battles level up your Yo-Kai friends which increase their power. Something I discovered recently was that at certain levels the Yo-Kai can evolve, this was a pleasant surprise.
The missions are not set, you can go off and explore to do side missions helping town folk with problems that the Yo-Kai are causing around town or finding/ buying stuff to open extra scenes and gain special items.
10 Minutes of YO-KAI WATCH Gameplay from E3 2015- shared from Polygon YouTube Channel
This is the first ever game I’ve played on a 3DS, I held off from owning a 3DS since I have never been a fan of 3D, I’m shaking my head now since I have missed so much without buying a 3DS ages ago!
The graphics are stunning and the controls are easy with the Nintendo 3DS D-pad. What I found annoying, is that every time I attack I have to get my stylus out- but this might be just because I’m not used to the 3DS gameplay quite yet.
I wished the map was more helpful, being able to actually search the area you need and mark where you want to go.
The cut scenes have great humour which had me smiling, you’ll love whisper who is the first Yo-Kai you meet in the game, he helps you along the way- not in an annoying way but he is next to you 24/7.
Yo-Kai Watch is for all ages but I think its best suited to 8 and up, K-Monster who is 10 picked up the game play really easily but needed some help with small things like how to change out Yo-Kai to different ones in his watch.
Yo-kai Watch will give you hours of enjoyment
Nintendo eShop currently has a demo of Yo-Kai Watch and episodes of the TV show too, this is all for free but WIFI is needed.
Yo-Kai watch has been very popular in Japan, with Yo-Kai 3 set to be released this year sometime. I hope the second instalment will be released to the west soon!
You can watch Yo-Kai Watch TV series on GO!TV here in Australia or on Disney XD.
